I started this blog for a class and my intention was to keep at it. Apparently that did not work. So it’s two years later and I think it is time I get my butt in gear. I’ve been through a lot of changes in the last two years. My mom died in 2014. It’s strange to think that I can never see or talk to her again. One minute she exisited and the next she did not. She was always a people person and in the end, she only had one brother left and he lived hundreds of miles away. Her friends and relatives she was close too had also passed already and her other children were spread out all over the place so me and my daughters had a nice little ceremony for her. We went with cremation and we each have a keepsake butterfly lamp which my oldest has still not unpacked. That was the beginning of my year. The end of 2014 I had to put one of my dogs down. The poor little thing went blind and would pace slowly all day long. Then she started attacking something she perceived as a threat that wasn’t actually there. It could be a door or wall, another dog or me. It wasn’t any way for her to live. The vet gave her medication to help but it didn’t do anything. Then 2015 rolled around and my boyfriend of twelve and a half years decided he needed a change so now I live in Cincinnati with my cousin and three Jack Russell Terriers. Starting over in a strange place is hard, not impossible, but hard. I’m not entirely sure which direction I will go in. I might go back to school, I had less than a year left for my bachelors. I will be writing more because I need the outlet and other than that we will just have to see the way the wind blows.
One of my favorite authors is Anne Rice. Just like many other authors, she utilizes social media to promote herself. Her Facebook page is wonderful and she maintains it herself. There is a wealth of information about Anne and also her husband and son. There is a library section that includes all of her works and information on them. She has videos posted where she discusses various topics. There are also photos of herself, her family and her beloved cats.
She refers to the fans on her page as “the people of the page”. She posts frequently about a wide variety of topics from current events and new authors. She seems to love engaging with others and answers as many comments as she can. She posts tons of pictures of Tum Tum her cat, a white cat with beautiful blue eyes. She puts a lot of herself into her page and comes across as being a good natured person. You do not feel as though you are conversing with a celebrity but more like you are talking with a friend.
She devotes a lot of her time to the page. Glancing at it shows that she puts up many posts every day that elicit a comment and get the conversation flowing. Although she does not have goodreads or any other book club style links on her page, she frequently mentions new authors and puts up links for their work.
All in all Anne Rice’s page is a wonderful example of how an author should run their page. She offers information about herself, but it is also highly personalized and reading through the various post you can tell she is very fond of the people of the page.
Change has a way of happening whether you want it to or not. Sometimes those changes bring about good things that you never would have encountered otherwise. They force you to do things differently. Almost two years ago I hurt my back. My life was comfortable. I worked for one of the top retailers. Anyone that works in retail can tell you that it is a pretty physical job no matter what position you have, from lowest to highest. I’d been thinking about going back to school for a while, but never got around to it. Then fate stepped in.
I realized that I could no longer do the same kind of work. So I started to think about what else I could do. I always enjoyed writing, but just for myself. So now I am earning my bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing and English. It’s been a wonderful experience and I have met some very interesting people. I also am getting over my shyness about sharing my writing with others.
If anyone had told me two years ago that I was going to move to another state, go for my bachelor’s degree and start a blog, I would have laughed. But, here I am and I’m doing all three. Change has been good for me in many ways.
